A step towards improving surgical care and training in Kenya’s regional hospitals

June 7–8, 2025 marked a pivotal moment in Kenya’s surgical education landscape as the Operating Theatre Practitioners Association of Kenya (OTPAK) organized a flexible endoscopy training workshop at Kisii. The workshop represents a positive step towards improving surgical care and training in regional hospitals.

Thirteen surgical residents from four major teaching hospitals—Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, Bungoma County Referral Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital—participated in the intensive two-day workshop. Led by both local and international experts, the training focused on best practices in flexible endoscopy and hands-on skill development.

A Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Surgical Care

This initiative was supported by OTPAK, key partner in eCAP project, whose mission is to equip Kenya’s regional hospitals with modern medical technologies. As part of this effort, OTPAK donated a state-of-the-art endoscopy tower to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, ensuring continued access to advanced equipment and fostering long-term skill retention.

Workshop Highlights

  • Residents demonstrated increased confidence in handling flexible endoscopes.
  • Hands-on practice using animal specimens provided realistic, tactile learning experiences.
  • Participants benefited from mentorship by both Kenyan and international surgical experts.

Building a Future of Excellence

This workshop marks the first step in a dedicated endoscopy program at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. With continued collaboration the initiative aims to expand access to high-quality surgical training and technology across Kenya.
